Niagara Basketball: A Storied Basketball Program

Niagara University, situated in Lewiston, New York, has a storied basketball program known for its achievements, competitiveness, noble players, and contributions to college basketball. This program was first established in the early 1900s to compete with regional teams. Over the time, Niagara basketball team emerged as a prominent performer in the college basketball games particularly in the northeastern United States. Niagara basketball became famous for its spirited play and competitive nature in 1950s.

Achievements

The men’s basketball team of Niagara University, Purple Eagles, participated many times in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division I, took part in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) many times, and won several conference championships. Niagara basketball received fame in 1970 qualifying NCAA Sweet Sixteen. In Niagara basketball history that was the most successful season.

The last decade of the 20th century was a challenging period for the team organizers who focused on performance and training to achieve best results. Strong recruiting and players’ development contributed well to the team’s success, and the dawn of the new millennium came with the achievements; Niagara basketball returned to performance qualifying the NCAA Tournament. They found success in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), winning conference titles.

Calvin Murphy

Calvin Murphy, a high-scoring guard, is a most prominent figure in the history of Niagara basketball. He draws attention of the national-level recruiters to the Niagara basketball program. The Calvin Murphy joined Niagara University in 1967, and for the first time team qualified for NCAA Sweet Sixteen round in 1970. His performance and achievements made the program immeasurable. Murphy is a three-time All-American guard who further played for the NBA’s Houston Rockets. He is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Hubie Brown

Hubie Jude Brown, a prominent figure in the basketball world, plays the role of both player and coach at Niagara but later became NBA coach and commentator. Brown is a two-time NBA Coach of the Year.
